Hi all. I was wondering if you could have more than one antivirus program running on your computer. Avvg does a good job at removing most crap but there is this worm on my labtop it finds but can't remove. Any help would be welcome. Thanks.

its not recomended. Some virus programs "clash" with each other, then everything gets screwed up.

Post 3 by rat (star trek rules!) on Thursday, 05-Jun-2008 21:00:15

no, not a good idea to have more than one, as the last post says, they'll go after each other, which isn't pretty.

Post 4 by forereel (Just posting.) on Thursday, 05-Jun-2008 21:47:49

So if AGV will not remove the virus then you can use a virus cleaner, or ask AVG tech support for help. The cleaners are only things you run and they don't clash, like C cleaner for one. AVG my have one as well.

No, it's not a good idea. But, witch version of AVG are you using?

Post 6 by battle star queen (I just keep on posting!) on Friday, 06-Jun-2008 8:49:38

avg antimalware 7.5

You should get AVG free 8.0 theyalready have a spyware blocker on there

Hei ,
I'm using two antiviruses and I recommend them.
First, use any signature based antivirus. I'm using nod32 3.
Then I downloaded threat fire (behaviour based antivirus). It can detect virusses by it's behaviour. It warns you, If some program tries to change some security things or tries to tamper with your programs etc.
It's free.
Google for it.
I'm using windoweyes mouse to access it.

I heard from some one that AVG 8 really slows down your computer though.

Post 10 by the illusive man (my ISP would be out of business if it wasn't for this haven I live at) on Friday, 06-Jun-2008 21:53:28

well, there wrong.
and, that threat fire sounds like windows defender

Post 11 by hamster (Zone BBS Addict) on Saturday, 07-Jun-2008 3:23:51

I'v never tried windows defender, But I'm feeling safer. For example, If I write some script and it's virus, normal signature based programs don't have a chance to catch it - because it's a completely new and unique program.
But this behaviour based antivirus have some chance. You receive updates every day. I must try to write something and I'll see. I'll report it here.

Post 12 by the illusive man (my ISP would be out of business if it wasn't for this haven I live at) on Saturday, 07-Jun-2008 20:28:18

well, defender already coes when you get the computer

Post 13 by hamster (Zone BBS Addict) on Sunday, 08-Jun-2008 2:42:24

well, but this is better, I think. You can even click a link at the alert and it will google for the file or display some extended info, if it is awailable.

Avira from
http://www.avira.com
is an excellent product.
Regarding Nod32 3.0, I have found that when a virus alert came up, Jaws wouldn't read it. To the person using nod32 3, are you a jaws user, and if so, does it read for you now when you have a virus?
Only problem I found with Threatfire is that it slowed down my machine, and caused problems with other programs. Converting files with goldwave gave me hell cause Threatfire blocked access to my mp3 files, causing Goldwave to not complete the job fully.

Post 15 by hamster (Zone BBS Addict) on Monday, 09-Jun-2008 12:41:05

I'm using windoweyes - well, it isn't so briliant with nod32 3.0 as in nod32 2.72, but it reads.
To thread fire - you must check allow this process to continue and remember this action and pproceed.

Wow! Lol. Again update the AVG to the latest version. I always say a person should run 3 protection programs. I said protection okay. 1. Anti virus. 2. A spy sweeper, or add program. and 3. a firewall. These 3 can work together. Now about programs slowing machines it depends on the machine, the ram you have, processor and many other factors, so. Once again if you feel your machine is infected then you need to get a cleaner type program. It works no matter what your running. One that does a boot scan is best, because it gets all before windows starts. The only issue with these is if the problem is in a system file you might cause issues with windows if you delete it, so some help is needed if your not a geek.

I recommend Avast Anti-Virus, probably the best free one. You only want one, they'll argue with each other. For the characteristic, or what they call heuristic-based anti-malware, most come with paid, however I use CyberHalk. C-Cleaner won't unnecessarily remove a worm, unless it's in cookies or whatever. I would try Avast Anti-Virus.
My Free Reccomendations
1) Anti-Virus: Avast Anti-Vir
2) Anti-Spyware: Spybot S&D with Real-Time Protection, very blind friendly
3) Firewall: ZoneAlarm, or I like the new Comodo. (Comodo not accessible)
4) Heuristic-based anti-malware: CyberHalk

allso sunbelt personal firewall is good. The settings aren't so accessible, as i want, but they can be reached with windoweyes mouse. It's free, but when you register, it'll do more for you - block popups and so on.

Post 19 by the illusive man (my ISP would be out of business if it wasn't for this haven I live at) on Monday, 16-Jun-2008 11:39:37

the new avg 8.0 already scans for spyware, and other harmfull software. Does threatfire automatically put something in the vault if it seems suspisous?

Post 20 by battle star queen (I just keep on posting!) on Tuesday, 17-Jun-2008 12:37:59

I've installed avg 8.0 on my labtop and my pc. But will it tell you if it found any harmful programs or viruses Also I've noticed that on some scans it scans more files and other times it doesn't. And this is after i hit the scan whole computer button. Is there anyway avg 8 can scan everything on your computer

Post 21 by Ukulele<3 (Try me... You know you want to.) on Tuesday, 17-Jun-2008 13:44:01

Does anyone use McAfee? If so, how do you remove the detected items. Comcast gives it to you for free and I really want to use it but I can't figure out how to use the program propperly. I can scan the computer all right but once it detects a harmful file, I'd like ti to clean/delete it. I couldn't find that option though. Any thoughts?

hmmm on't like macafee, and avg8.0 scans the entire system when you hit scan whole computer

Post 23 by forereel (Just posting.) on Tuesday, 17-Jun-2008 21:50:23

I like 17's free suggestions. All are good program, accessible too. I use Avast as one of mine. Another things is many programs are accessible to Jaws, or Window Eyes, but your computing skills have to be ajustable, meaning you can figure out several ways to get the information you want to see from your screen reader, and that is the tough part about saying wich of these programs are best, or completely accessible. One user might fine them easy and another won't. All the program scan the complete system, but they must be targeted to do so. The default settings usually are set to do this, but I find this subject tough for the reasons I have stated wich work best. Get the main 3 good one, and your set.

Post 24 by Ukulele<3 (Try me... You know you want to.) on Wednesday, 18-Jun-2008 0:44:44

Yes. I don't find avast accessible at all because it never tells you how much you've scanned. Now if anyone can figure out how to do that and post here, that would be great. lol Also avast's menus aren't ver accessible too. My jaws freezes when I try to access it. I can scan fine but I like to know how long it's going to take.

Post 25 by the illusive man (my ISP would be out of business if it wasn't for this haven I live at) on Wednesday, 18-Jun-2008 17:55:58

avg 8.0 is very accessessable for jaws users

Post 26 by forereel (Just posting.) on Thursday, 19-Jun-2008 1:52:43

Avast is accessible. It depends on the Skin you pic for it. No Skin is best, or the default one. It will anounce how much it has go. Jaws says 50% or whatever. I'm running Jaws 9, but it work's as well with 7 and up. There is some help on the freedom scientific site for you. To much to explain here, but go there and see if that helps.

Post 29 by changedheart421 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Thursday, 19-Jun-2008 15:28:05

does anyone know of a good registry cleaner? Thanks a lot.

Post 30 by battle star queen (I just keep on posting!) on Thursday, 19-Jun-2008 16:54:02

you might want to try ccleaner. It has a tool for cleaning your registry. Go to www.jaws-users.com

Post 31 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Thursday, 19-Jun-2008 21:55:12

give C Cleaner a shot. That one is excellent for registry and cleaning out extra stuff no longer needed by your machine. Google for it, and it should pop up as the first heading.

Post 32 by changedheart421 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Friday, 20-Jun-2008 0:34:04

hey so it does clean the reg ok. I do use it but wanted to make sure it worked well.

Post 33 by the illusive man (my ISP would be out of business if it wasn't for this haven I live at) on Friday, 20-Jun-2008 12:27:29

does cleaner clean drive d?

Post 34 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Saturday, 21-Jun-2008 1:16:28

Your CD drive? That's what my D drive is anyway.

Post 35 by hamster (Zone BBS Addict) on Saturday, 21-Jun-2008 4:49:17

it cleans all hard drives - allso external drives and flash drives. But I think, that it cleans only recyclee bins of non-system drives. On system drive (usually C:), there is lots of things to celan.
ehm, cleaning CD drive? good joke.

Post 36 by changedheart421 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Saturday, 21-Jun-2008 17:45:49

alert, do not download threat fire. I did and it and jaws do not get along. It messed up my scripts and I had to have sighted help uninstalling it.

I use AVG 8.0 and I have it set up so it does my scan in the background.

Post 38 by hamster (Zone BBS Addict) on Sunday, 22-Jun-2008 6:09:52

I used thread fire with windoweyes and no problem. Maybe only with jaws.
Yes, and allso sunbelt personal firewall didn't want to accept it. It alerted me that it's code injection.

Post 39 by the illusive man (my ISP would be out of business if it wasn't for this haven I live at) on Monday, 23-Jun-2008 18:49:52

I also use AVG 8.0
